"In From the Rain" (New York Times, 2 August 2009) is Verlyn Klinkenborg at his best, observant, attentive to the small dramas of the earth in ways that convey their familiarity and their sometimes ominous mysteries. Like him, I have been thinking much of water this summer, and especially of the power of rain.
Grey wall moving.
Darker air, fresh wet smell,
wind filling the trees.
When the rain comes,
there is nothing else.
